General information
Weather One thing is guaranteed, the weather is changeable! We find XC Weather forecast quite accurate.
Emergencies The Langabhat Medical Practice is based in Miavaig and the doctor can be contacted during working hours on 01851 86022. Between 6pm and 8am NHS 24 will answer any calls. The Western Isles Hospital is in Stornoway and can be contacted on 01851 704704. Prescriptions can be filled at Langabhat Medical Practice or there is a chemist and a Boots in Stornoway.
Shopping
The Uig Community Shop is only a short drive away and is well stocked with grocery essentials and Uig souvenirs. There is also petrol, cash machine, launderette and post office. Opening Hours:
- 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday in the Summer
- Reduced hours 9am to 5pm in the Winter
- Petrol is available 24/7 with a credit/debit card operated system out of hours
Stornoway is by far the largest settlement in the Western Isles. The busy harbour with freight, ferry and traffic is also home to a significant fishing fleet. A number of the streets in the centre are pedestrianised giving access to an interesting range of shops. There are two supermarkets; Co-Op and Tesco.


Food and Drink
Comunn Eachdraidh Uig (Community Centre) is great for a snack lunch locally. The heart of our community where you can enjoy sandwiches, soups, cakes and chat with some of the locals. There is also the Uig Museum and Heritage Centre there too.
Loch Croistean Coffee Shop & Restaurant is by the side of Loch Croistean on the way to Uig. A great place for a cup of coffee and light meals are also served. Open June to September, Tuesday to Saturday; rest of the year Wednesday to Saturday 12pm to 8pm. Excellent buffet on a Friday and Saturday from 7.30pm till late. Loch Croistean is not licensed but you can bring your own bottle.
The Edge Café is located at the top of our village, The Edge Café is open every day except Tuesday and Saturday and serves coffee, cakes, snacks and full meals. It is essential to contact Fiona to book should you want to eat in an evening. See the Facebook page
Uig Sands Restaurant opened in 2019. Lunches and evening meals available with glorious views over Uig Bay. See the website for opening times and to book online.
Abhainn Dearg is our local whisky distillery. Meaning ‘Red River’ this is the first legal distillery in the Outer Hebrides and they are making history! Their single malt is single cask, distilled and bottled by hand in Uig. Their Ten Year Old will be ready in 2018. Open from 11am to 1pm, 2pm to 4pm Monday to Saturday for tours and tasting every half hour. Find out more on their website
Transport
Ferries operate into Stonoway, Tarbert and Leverburgh with Caledonian MacBrayne
Flights Stornoway from Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh with Loganair
Buses are run by the local council who operate a range of routes around the island
Carhire is available from Carhire Hebrides and MacKinnon Self Drive
