Local Contacts & Information

Sunday Observance - When planning your day’s activities, please bear in mind that Sunday Observance is strong here. This may mean that a shop/site/café you were thinking of going to may be shut. Also, ensure that you fill up with petrol on a Saturday, just in case. For more information see - www.isle-of-lewis.com/index.php/general-information/sundays-on-the-isle-of-lewis/.

Weather - One thing is guaranteed, the weather is changeable – we find XCWeather's forecast quite accurate - www.xcweather.co.uk/forecast/hs2%209ja

Emergency -

Medical Practice - Langabhat Medical Practice is based in Miavaig. The doctor can be contacted during working hours on 01851 860222 or via their website - www.langabhatmedicalpractice.co.uk. Between 6pm and 8am NHS 24 will answer any calls. To get there, drive back to the B8011 and turn left as if going back to Stornoway. Take the first left turn and go over the bridge. The surgery is on your right past the church.

Hospital - Western Isles Hospital, Macaulay Road, Stornoway. Tel. 01851 704704. To get there, drive back into Stornoway, coming in on the A858. Turn left at the roundabout onto the A857 (Macaulay Road). The hospital is a short distance on your right.

Pharmacy - Prescriptions can be filled at Langabhat Medical Practice. Otherwise, there is a local dispensing chemist in Stornoway, as well as a Boots.

Uig Community Shop - Only a short drive away (approximately 4 miles) the Community shop is a well stocked shop carrying grocery essentials, along with interesting Uig souvenirs. They also offer petrol, a cash machine, launderette and post office. Opening Hours:

  • 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday
  • 9am to 6pm Thurs and Fri
  • Post Office is not open Wednesdays or Saturdays
  • Petrol is available 24/7 with a credit/debit card operated system in the foyer out of hours

Stornoway is by far the largest settlement in the Western Isles. The harbour remains busy with freight, ferry and leisure traffic, and home to a significant fishing fleet. A number of the streets in the centre are pedestrianised providing good access to an interesting range of shops pleasantly different from the usual outlets colonising most UK High Streets. There are two supermarkets: Co-op & Tesco.  Tesco will deliver around the island but do book well ahead!

Thinking of moving to the Outer Hebrides?

These islands on the edge are an amazing place to live.  There are challenges but the way of life, community and landscape are incredible!  We moved here in 2006 and our son Elliot is Hebridean born and bred!  We'd be happy to talk to you about what it is like to live here, the things you might consider and how to make the move.

The 'Outer Hebrides Relocation Services' can offer help and advice with such a move - www.ohrs.co.uk.
